B12 engine 61572 | ||
Driver and Fireman Terry Pell and Gerald Thomas were looking after this B12 engine at Railfest. They are from north Norfolk where 61572 hauls passenger excursions on The Poppy Line. They estimated that if there was a ten year financial plan to maintain this engine in running order it would be about £300,000. Their enthusiasm for keeping the loco running was obvious. They freely talked to all the enthusiasts who stepped onto the footplate about its mechanical details as well as telling stories about its journey to York. Occassionally Terry would leave his seat to stoke the boiler with another shovel of coal from the tender. Flames from the firebox lit up the cab and I was in another era. It reminded me of the exciting days, early in the morning, when a friendly engine driver would let me into the cab of an engine at Lincoln Central. Green Arrow was a regular visitor then and it was just one of the engines I "cabbed" as a 12 year old. |
